The First Three Months: Watching Your Baby Wake Up to the World

Discover the remarkable developmental leaps happening in your baby first quarter-year.

Pediatric Guidance

The transformation in your baby first three months is nothing short of miraculous. Your newborn arrives with reflexes and basic needs; by three months, they begin intentionally interacting with their world.

By 6 to 8 weeks, many babies smile socially—genuine smiles in response to your face or voice. Around the same time, your baby starts paying attention to objects with more focus, following movement with their eyes. By 3 months, many babies hold their head up with decreasing wobbliness and begin noticing their own hands.

Tummy time is crucial during this period. Starting with just a few minutes daily and building to 15 to 30 minutes total by 7 weeks, tummy time builds neck and shoulder strength—the foundation for rolling over, sitting, and eventually crawling. Your baby may not like it initially, but it is essential for motor development.

Vocalization changes too. Newborns cry to communicate, but by 3 months you will notice cooing sounds during alert, happy times. Around 2 to 3 months your baby might begin to laugh. The foundation of all future learning and language is being built in these early months.
