Childproofing Your Home: The Complete Baby Safety Checklist

Identify hazards room-by-room and take practical steps to create a safe space for your growing baby.

Pediatric Guidance

As your baby grows more mobile, your home transforms into a landscape of potential hazards. Childproofing means identifying and eliminating genuine risks while creating an environment where your baby can safely explore and learn.

Get down on your hands and knees at baby level and look around. You will see electrical outlets, lamp cords, sharp table corners, items on low shelves—these are your baby world. Start with the basics: outlet covers, cord wraps, baby gates at stairs, cabinet locks for cleaning supplies and medications, and corner guards on furniture.

In the kitchen, never warm formula in the microwave—it creates hot spots. Keep pot handles turned inward. In the bathroom, close the toilet lid and store all medications in a locked cabinet. Never leave your baby unattended near water.

Throughout your home, secure heavy furniture to walls. Babies pull themselves up on furniture; TVs and dressers can topple fatally if not anchored. Review your home regularly as your baby reaches new developmental stages—each new skill means a new set of hazards to address.
