Baby's First Bath: A Gentle Step-by-Step

Make bath time calm, safe, and enjoyable for both of you from the very first dip.

Pediatric Guidance

There's no need to rush into a full bath — sponge baths are perfectly sufficient until the umbilical cord stump falls off, usually at 1–3 weeks. After that, a bath 2–3 times a week is plenty for most babies.

Before You Begin

Gather everything before undressing baby — a cold baby is an unhappy baby.

Step-by-Step: The First Bath

1

Undress baby and lower them gently

Support baby's head and neck with one hand, bottom with the other. Lower them feet-first into the water while keeping their head well above the surface.

2

Keep one hand on baby at all times

Maintain contact throughout the entire bath. A wet baby is slippery — never let go, even briefly.

3

Wash face first with a damp cloth

No soap on the face. Wipe each eye from the inner corner outward with a separate part of the cloth.

4

Wash the body with gentle downward strokes

Pay attention to skin folds — neck, armpits, behind the knees, and groin — where moisture can cause irritation.

5

Wash hair last

Cradle baby's head over the tub and pour a small amount of water. A soft baby brush can help with cradle cap.

6

Lift out and wrap immediately

Lift baby with both hands and wrap snugly in a hooded towel. Pat (don't rub) dry and dress quickly to keep baby warm.

After Bath Care

Baby skin is 20–30% thinner than adult skin and loses moisture much faster. A fragrance-free moisturizer applied immediately after drying — while skin is still slightly damp — locks in hydration beautifully.

Never leave baby alone in the bath — not even for a second. Drowning can occur in less than 5 cm of water. If you must leave, take baby with you.
