The evidence-based rules that protect your baby every single time they sleep.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and sleep-related infant deaths are devastating — and largely preventable. Following these seven evidence-based rules at every single sleep dramatically reduces the risk.
Always back to sleep
Place baby on their back for every sleep until their first birthday — naps and nighttime. Once baby can roll both ways independently, they can find their own position.
Use a firm, flat sleep surface
A safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard with a firm mattress and fitted sheet. No inclined sleepers, bouncers, or car seats for routine sleep.
Keep the sleep space bare
No pillows, loose blankets, bumpers, stuffed animals, or positioning wedges. The surface should be completely empty apart from baby.
Room-share, don't bed-share
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends baby sleep in your room on a separate, safe surface for at least the first 6 months, ideally 12.
Keep the room cool and comfortable
Room temperature between 18–20°C (65–68°F). Dress baby in one extra layer compared to what you're comfortable in. The back of their neck should feel warm, not sweaty.
Avoid smoke, alcohol, and sedating drugs near baby
Secondhand smoke doubles SIDS risk. Alcohol and sedating medications impair your ability to respond to baby's needs.
Offer a pacifier at sleep time
Research shows offering a pacifier at bedtime and nap time reduces SIDS risk. If breastfeeding, wait until feeding is well established around 3–4 weeks.
Swaddling is safe and soothing when done correctly — snug across the chest but loose at the hips. Stop swaddling as soon as baby shows any sign of rolling, usually by 3–4 months.
Car seat sleep outside the car is a significant suffocation risk. If baby falls asleep in the car, move them to their crib as soon as you arrive home — don't let them continue sleeping in the seat.
